Aemon made Oscar empty his bag before they left, instructing everyone to eat what came out before taking more fruit from the trees. After stuffing themselves full of fruit, Rose and her friends moved on, making camp several hours beyond the wild orchard.

Truth be told, it had pained Rose not to fill her own pack with the beautiful fruit. But she knew Aemon was right. They oughtn’t give in to greed.

Still, as they sat around the fire that night and drank sweet water from a nearby stream, spirits were high. Even the moaning wind had chosen to take a rest, leaving the night empty and ripe for fae songs and laughter. Rose was snuggled against Aemon, happy to have his arm around her waist and her stomach satisfied as she did. She’d even managed to forget most of the details from the vision she’d seen in the forest, forcing herself instead to focus on the man sitting beside her now. As if to help her in this endeavor, roses which hadn’t been there when she had chosen her seat had sprouted all around the log upon which they sat, and she rubbed them absently as she closed her eyes and rested against his chest, listening to the steady, comforting beat of his heart.

It was in moments like this that Rose was tempted to forget Nuala had ever lived. If they could stay in the here and now forever, she would be more than happy.

“She was just a little thing,” Oscar was chuckling to her friends. “No taller than my knee. But little Princess Ruby–as I knew her then, of course–had the confidence of a bear.”

Everyone, even Aemon, laughed at this. Rose blushed and leaned further into his side.

“For some reason, the princess got it into her head that she wasn’t going to her grandfather’s royal supper that night. So after the servants had gotten her all dressed up with ribbons in her curls and the most beautiful little yellow gown you’d ever seen, she snuck outside when no one was watching.”

Rose’s father was smiling as he listened, his eyes distant. It was the most like himself Rose had seen him since he’d tasted the fae food.

“So when it finally comes time for the family to leave, the princess is discovered to be missing. Oh, you can’t imagine the chaos of having lost a princess! Especially when she was miniature!” Oscar was roaring with laughter now.

“Where did you find her?” Duani asked. Rose stared at her when she did, as did half the camp. Despite their turn in fortune, Duani had continued to act sullen and withdrawn throughout the trek. Perhaps Oscar did deserve some credit, after all, even if it was only for making their youngest member smile.

“The princess–” Oscar had to keep pausing to breathe as he laughed so hard he nearly fell off his log. “Had found a gardener’s hole–and buried herself–up to her bodice–in the dirt! And because her dress matched the flowers–no one thought to look in the ground!”

At this, the entire company let out a roar of laughter.
